I’ve been adding new pictures to the strangers gallery on my portfolio site. Most of them are wonky, blurry photos, but I really love the moments they capture.

Yay!–I can finally show you some more pictures of the new Fictionist CD, which came out on Tuesday (at iTunes and amazon and everywhere else, grab one). I just got my own copy in the mail, so I gave a try at taking some ‘product shots’. Graphic design is by Rob Carmichael and the photo of the band is by Rick Egan.
This is definitely the most involved project I’ve ever been a part of, and I couldn’t be more pleased with the results.

Besides my portfolio site being 100% all new and updated, there’s lots of new & old work that you’ve never seen.
Exciting! Go see
I found blingee and might quit making collages and switch animated gifs. I could (did) make these all day long.

Brion Gysin was my first try. A little feeble, but we’re just getting started. I was thinking about maybe what he saw in his dreammachine.

This is the Egyptian Sky Goddess Nut, with Anubis (the jackal god) PLUS sphinx kitties and crystal balls. Getting warmer.

Pyramids, yes.

The last one for today, probably my favorite. Egyptian Sky, Earth, and Air deities.
So, three huge developments:
I’m excited to announce my first international solo show. Lots of my collages are on display at Preteen gallery in Hermosillo, Mexico. All pictures are courtesy of the gallery. At the opening they celebrated Preteen’s first anniversary–and congratulations–they’ve had a year full of truly amazing exhibits. Visit Preteen to see more. Quoted from their site:
PRETEEN IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE PIE IN THE SKY YOU KNOW HOW I FEEL; A NEW SOLO SHOW BY NORTH CAROLINA-BASED ARTIST BRANDI STRICKLAND. STRICKLAND’S MINIMAL GRAPHIC ASSEMBLAGES RESEMBLE THOSE OF HANNAH HÖCH IN THAT THEY SERVE AS DOCUMENTS OF DAY TO DAY EPHEMERA AND THAT THEY PORE OVER FEMALE SUBJECTIVITY IN A SCANT AND DELICATE MANNER. ALSO, THEY SCRUTINIZE THE POWER STRUCTURES THAT SHAPE THE VISUAL OUTCOMES OF GEOGRAPHY, TOPOGRAPHY AND MATHEMATICS. THE HUMAN BODY AND NATURE ARE REPRESENTED IN AN OFTEN FRAGMENTED, NEBULOUS AND NOSTALGIC WAY. TEXT BECOMES A MERE ORNAMENTAL COMPONENT MORE THAN A LINGUISTIC OR POETIC SIGNIFIER. HER METHOD OF WORK ALLOWS HER COLLAGE PIECES TO DEVELOP INTO AN ODDLY APOLITICAL ACCOUNT OF QUOTIDIAN LIFE.

I haven’t posted in forever and feel guilty. August was a busy month, mostly with behind the scenes work. I’ve been in the studio making lots of new art, and we’ve been making plans for revamping Paper Whistle. Look forward to lots more new stuff over the next little bit.
A few things from August:

New series around the bend…

I sent some work to fellow WAFA members in Seattle. It’s supposed to be hung in the streets!

I bought 350 National Geographic magazines for $20!! Holy shit! Thank you CraigsList.

We saw The Books in Raleigh, a phenomenal show.
We missed you. <3 More blogging in September, promise.
I’m sending out a new batch of postcards today. Some are going out to WAFA folks, and others to special friends. Send me your address and I’ll do my best to send you some mail! A sampler:

More postcards from the WAFA collaboration! Anthony Zinonos sent these to me. It was a thrill to find his artwork in my mailbox, and to be honest, I was a little nervous to work on top of his art. But, I like the results and I’m looking forward to more.
In each pair the first is Anthony’s work the way I received it, and the second is my collaboration.

Check out the postcards that I sent to Anthony here.
I’ve exchanged postcards with everyone in the WAFA collective, and Anthony Zinonos is the first to upload the results. I’ve also received 3 postcards from Anthony and they’ll be up soon. Really exciting, my first ever collaboration with another artist!
For each picture pair the first is my postcard the way I sent it out, the second shows the result of the collaboration. Anthony’s work is playful and fun, but so thoughtful at the same time. These make me happy.
